Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the frequency and epidemiologic characteristics of the head traumas in children of less than five years of age.

Methods: Cross-sectional survey to mothers randomly selected from the outpatient general pediatric clinic. Information of the characteristics of head trauma suffered by their children was collected.

Results: A total of 199 surveys were performed and 446 head injuries were reported. Detailed information was obtained in 310 cases. In 271 (87.4%) the accident happened at home and 164 (52.9%) occurred in the afternoon. Free falls were the most frequent mechanism of trauma in 211 (68.1%), and the bed was the usual place of the accident (122). In 23 (7.4%) of cases the mother went to the hospital and in 43 (13.9%) to a health center. In 4 (1.3%) the child's hospitalization was necessary.

Conclusions: Nine out of ten children under five years suffered from head trauma. Most of the patients presented more than 2 events. The accidents occurred frequently at home in the afternoon as a result of free fall, usually from bed.
