Treatment of Pulmonary Exacerbations in Children with Cystic Fibrosis

Respiratory exacerbations of cystic fibrosis was defined as the need for additional antibiotic treatment prescribed by a recent change in at least two of the following parameters: change in amount or color of sputum, increased cough, increased feeling of malaise, fatigue or lethargy, anorexia or weight loss, decreased lung function greater than 10%, radiographic changes or increased dyspnea. Respiratory exacerbations should be prevented and treated promptly and aggressively to improve or maintain lung function, improve quality of life and prolong survival. They are caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. Treatment strategies consist of antibiotics that can be administered in a hospital or outpatient according to the severity of symptoms, enhancement of respiratory physiotherapy and nebulized bronchodilators and mucolytics further treatment management of comorbidities.
