Objective: To describe the rates and the trends of morbidity and mortality of children hospitalized at
the Children's Hospital, today National Institute of Child Health (INSN), from 1930 until 1960.
Material and methods: Comparative descriptive study with historical epidemiological approach was
used as data source files of the Bureau of statistics of the INSN.
Results: From 1931 until 1939 the total number of deaths was 5,391 of a total of 18,561 hospitalized
patients with a mortality rate of 29.04%. From 1940 until 1949 there were 44,959 hospitalized with a mortality rate of 18.26%. There were 63,059 children hospitalized with a mortality rate of 17.96% from 1950 to 1959. Most diseases (> 60%) belongedtotheGroupI(communicable, maternal, perinatal diseases, malnutrition) compared with Group II (non-communicable diseases) and Group III accidents and injuries) in 1940, 1950 and 1960. We conducted a non-parametric test of trend and it was verified that the trend observed in the grouped values is significant (p = 0.007).
Conclusion: In 1940, 1950 and 1960 the observed morbidity had a tendency to decrease in Group I and increase in Group II.
