Abstract

Objective: To describe the incidence and general features of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterms of very low birth weight born at the Instituto Materno Perinatal (IMP) in a 8-year period (2008-2016).

Methods and settings: Descriptive, retrospective, transversal study. All very low birth weight and less than 32-weeks preterms were included, as long as they had at least one brain sonography report.

Results: 2095 premature babies, 378 of which had a diagnosis of IVH (18.4%). Global incidence of severe IVH was 8.1%. 702 preterm babies with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) were included, the incidence of IVH in the ELBW population was 31.3% and of severe IVH was 14.4%. A decrease of -46.6% of incidence of IVH was observed from year 2008 to 2016. Also there was a reduction of severe IVH incidence from 14.55% in 2008 to 4.44 in 2016 (- 69.48%). In the ELBW population, a reduction of -51.17% in IVH incidence was observed between 2008 (45.24%) and 2016 (22.09%). Severe IVH also decreased from 33.3% in 2008 to 5.81% in 2016 (-82.5%).

Conclusions: The incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage in the population of preterms at risk born at the INMP has decreased. The reduction of incidence was also observed in the segment of population with extreme low birth weight.
