Pulmonary complications of systemic lupus erythematosus usually affect all lung compartments causing parenchymal lesions, interstitial lung disease, alveolar hemorrhage, pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolic disease, and pleuritis with or without pleural effusion.
We describe the case of a 9-year-old girl with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus who entered the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins Hospital due to fever, cough and progressive dyspnea, identifying cavitary images in multiple lung segments.
Cavitary pulmonary images in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus are rare and are generally secondary to infectious or embolic processes; however, cases of unknown etiology, probably due to vasculitis, are reported; These vascular abnormalities produce ischemic necrosis causing areas of pulmonary cavitation as a result of the disease activity.
