Level of knowledge about asthma in parents of asthmatic children attending a specialized outpatient clinic at Yanahuara III Hospital-Arequipa

Objective: This is a prospective observational study whose objective was to determine the level of knowledge about asthma in the parents of asthmatic children attending an outpatient clinic of the Asthma Program at III Yanahuara Hospital.
Materials and methods: A representative sample of 200 parents of children with asthma, was surveyed using the NAQK (Newcastle Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire). Results are shown using descriptive statistics and groups are compared using Chi-square test, ANOVA and the Tukey HSD Post-hoc test.
Results: It was found that 62% of the parents have regular knowledge about asthma and good in 27.5%, being deficient in only 10.5% of the cases; this result is statistically superior in comparison with other studies. Respect to the knowledge of asthma in its general aspects, asthma crisis, controller treatment and myths, knowledge were all regular with 66.5%, 63.0%, 54.0% and 48.0% respectively. Correlating the influence of some factors on the levelofknowledgewasonlyfoundtoinfluencethe time spent in the asthma program with statistical difference (p = 0.01)
Conclusions: The level of knowledge about asthma in this study was regular but higher than in other studies and predominantly depends on the length of stay in the asthma program.
