Abstract

Objective: To describe clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with A H1N1 Influenza at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño, 2009.

Materials and Methods: Descriptive study. We reviewed the records of Epidemiology and contrasted with the medical records of patients treated at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño with A H1N1 Influenza, from June to August 2009.

Results: 436 cases were recorded. 82% were outpatients. The male (55%) and the age group higher than 5 years (70%) were the most affected. Of all throat swabs made (147) more than 67% were positive and cough was the most frequent sign (90%). Among inpatients children (73) Asthma, Epilepsy, Congenital Heart Disease and Bronchial Obstruction Syndrome (Viral Wheezing) (30%) were the most frequent associated diseases,; In 30%, was recorded pneumococcal vaccine and 53%, the onset of the disease varied from 3 to 7 days. The 27% of inpatients had leukopenia; almost 75% received antiviral treatment (Oseltamivir) and throat swab result delayed to 3-5 days in the 55%. In this series, 10% of all patients with positive throat swab, died.

Conclusion: The co-morbidity, male gender and age between 5-15 years were predominant. The overall mortality rate was 13%.
