Abstract

Objective: To describe and compare the diseases most frequently associated with late preterm infants and term infants in the period September 2009 - March 2010 at the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia.

Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive study of patient records late preterm and term infants in the period September 2009 - March 2010 at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Patients with severe congenital malformations incompatible with life and readmissions were excluded. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA.

Results: There were 2406 patients admitted to our study, we recruited 77 patients between 34 0/7 to 36 6/7ss gestational age (3.2%). Among the characteristics of the population is observed that there is greater RNPT PEG compared to RNAT (49.35% vs.6.31%), the 33.76% of RNPT requiring hospitalization (27.27% in IU and 6.49% by UCIRN) and RNAT the 14.47% (14.26% in IU and 0.21% in UCIRN). With regard to neonatal morbidity, there is increased incidence of newborn jaundice, transient tachypnea (TT), infection and hypoglycemia in preterm infants (p <0.00000). The incidence of polycythemia and hypernatremia was not statistically significant when comparing both groups of infants. With regard to renal impairment, neurological and cardiovascular was not affected in any PN.

Conclusions: Late preterm infants are at increased risk our environment for complications that require hospital admission in the early neonatal period as respiratory difficulty, jaundice, infection and hypoglycemia.
