The aim of this article is to perform a review of the rate of nasopharyngeal carriers, the burden of invasive pneumococcal disease and changes in serotypes and antibiotic resistance of pneumococcus throughout the 10 years of investigation of the Peruvian Research Group in Pneumococcus (GPIN). Two studies of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) were conducted before and after the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Peru, corresponding to the periods 2006-2008 and 2009-2011 respectively. At the same time, a study of nasopharyngeal carriers in children younger than 2 years of age was carried out in seven regions of Peru during the years 2007-2009. The introduction of pneumococcal vaccination has achieved a reduction in the incidence of IPD in children under 2 years and in global lethality. However, high rates of resistance to major antibiotics persist. Continued surveillance of serotypes and antibiotic susceptibility in nasopharyngeal carriers and invasive strains in the post-introduction era of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines is required to establish therapeutic and prevention recommendations at the local level.
