Abstract

Introduction: Congenital malformations are morphological or functional defects that are present at birth because of genetic and / or environmental, they affect between 2-5 % of births. With prevalence between 1.5 to 4 %, which can be increased to 7% during the first year of life in Peru, the prevalence of congenital malformations is 1.7%. Objective: To identify maternal risk factors associated with congenital malformations in newborns. Methods: An observational case-control study was performed, the database Perinatal Information System Hospital Belén de Trujillo, 2010-2012 was used. The case group consisted of 145 infants with birth defects and 435 infants without congenital malformations to the control group. Results: The frequency of risk factors in both groups, as well as the strength of association between factors and malformations, were analyzed the factors that force showed statistically significant association was teenage maternal age-advanced maternal age (OR = 1.69 IC95% 1.4-3.1) and preterm gestational age (OR = 4.5 IC95% 2.7-7.4). Conclusions: The preterm gestational age and teen-advanced age maternal are risk factors for a newborn to develop birth defects.
