Objective: Determine the factors associated with the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding at Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
Material and methods: An analytical, retrospective, case control observational study was conducted to identify whether maternal age, level of education, occupation and parity are factors associated with the cessation of exclusive breastfeeding before the sixth month of life. 78 mothers of infants born between January and June 2022 at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo who met the selection criteria were included, with the cases being those who abandoned exclusive breastfeeding and the controls those who maintained breastfeeding until the sixth month. The factors analyzed were maternal age, level of education, parity and occupation, using Pearson's Chisquare statistical test and the Odds Ratio was calculated with 95% CI.
Results: A highly significant statistical relationship was obtained between the abandoning of exclusive breastfeeding before six months and the following factors: maternal age of 14-19 years (p<0.05 OR: 12.3), level of education up to incomplete secondary school (p<0.05 OR: 18.3) and primiparity (p<0.05 OR: 9.4). No significant association was observed with the occupation factor (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Age between 14-19 years, level of education up to incomplete secondary school, and primiparity are factors associated with abandoning exclusive breastfeeding before six months.
