Objective: Determine if cesarean delivery is a risk factor for excessive weight loss in neonates at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo. Materials and methods: Case-control study, where neonates of both sexes participated, born at the Belén Hospital in Trujillo in hospital discharge condition, during January 2019 to December 2023. Results: It was observed that 61.4% (35) of neonates born by cesarean section experienced excessive weight loss, while only 38.6% (22) of those born vaginally had this condition. After adjusting the results for maternal age and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), cesarean section was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of excessive weight loss, with an adjusted OR of 2.37 (95% CI 1.20 4.67) and a pvalue of 0.013. Additionally, both maternal age and exclusive breastfeeding showed significant associations with excessive weight loss, with pvalues of 0.034 and 0.010, respectively. Conclusions: Cesarean delivery is a risk factor for excessive neonatal weight loss, adjusted for maternal age and exclusive breastfeeding.
