Objective: to describe the characteristics of children under two years of age with iron deficiency anemia who were admitted to the San Miguel del Padrón Pediatric Hospital in the period 2020 2023.
Material and methods: a descriptive crosssectional observational study was conducted in children under two years of age with iron deficiency anemia, admitted to the San Miguel del Padrón Pediatric Hospital, 20202023. The variables studied were: age, sex, intensity of anemia, biological factors (gestational anemia, low birth weight, infections, malnutrition), sociodemographic factors (adolescent mother, low educational level, low family per capita, abandonment of breastfeeding, incorrect supplementation, nonuse of nutritional supplements).
Results: a total of 1192 children were studied. Males (59.64%) and ages between 3 and 6 months (39.93%) predominated. Anemia of moderate intensity reached 55.12%. Gestational anemia and malnutrition occurred in 54.61% and 31.12% of patients. When anemia was related to sociodemographic factors, there was a predominance of nonsupplementation (65.18%), abandonment of breastfeeding (63.25%) and low per capita family (54.78%).
Conclusions: boys aged between 3 and 6 months predominated, with gestational anemia, no supplementation, abandonment of breastfeeding, low economic per capita and complementation errors
