Abstract

Objective: Determine vaccination coverage and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine associated factors by parents and children in a pediatric outpatient setting in a private health care center in northern Lima, between June and July 2023.

Material and methods: Parents of children aged between 6 months to 17 years were surveyed. The COVID-19 vaccination coverage in the respondents was contrasted with the information obtained from the Single National Repository of Health Information (Reunis) of the Ministry of Health of Peru. The associated factors were determined by logistic regression analysis.

Results: 702 parents were surveyed. Adequate vaccination coverage against COVID-19 was high among parents (89.2%) and low in children: 63% between 12 to 17 years old, 19.6% between 5 to 11 years old and only 10.2% between 6 months to 4 years. Similar figures were observed according to the Reunis source. Coverage for traditional vaccines in children was high (80%), low for Influenza (54%) and very low for COVID-19 (16.7%). The associated factors with not COVID-19 vaccination in children were: parents with incomplete COVID-19 vaccination, incomplete traditional vaccines and incomplete influenza vaccines in children. Age was found as protective factor, every time the older they were the lower the risk of not being vaccinated.

Conclusions: Vaccination coverage for COVID-19 was high in parents and low in children. Three factors associated with low COVID-19 vaccine coverage in children and one protective factor were identified.
