Objective: To determine national hospital direct costs for preterm infants admission in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit during 2009.
Methods: It ́s a retrospective study of direct costs obtained from Database of Costs Unit of Cayetano Heredia’s Hospital and medical history of preterm infants (< 37 weeks) admitted (> 24 hours) in the intensive care unit during 2 009 and checking account per patient. To analize the data, we use SPSS program version 15.0 and the ANOVA test and chi square.
Results: The direct total cost of preterm infants was S/. 645 593.16 and the direct costs of admission represent 46.56 %. The preterm newborn of 27 to 29 weeks and 1 001 to 1 250 gr. were the highest costs (S/. 10 909.52 and S/. 9 816.76 respectively). The most common cause of hospitalization was acute respiratory disease (77.63%), which had the highest cost, sepsis (57.89%) and jaundice (50%).
Conclusions: The highest direct costs were represented by direct costs of admission of preterm infants between 27 to 32 weeks and 751 to1500gr.
