Objective: To describe the clinical and demographic characteristics, and related factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm infants with birth weight ≤ 2000 gr. and that were diagnosed at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia from 2005 to 2010.
Materials and Methods: A case series analitical study was done. Monitoring reports of preterms and discharge epicrisis from the Neonatalology Service of Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia were reviewed from 2005 to 2010, the data were filled in a data collection sheet. A univariate and multivariate analysis were perfomed.
Results: Of 247 patients, 77 were diagnosed with ROP at any degree. We found an incidence of 311 per 1000 infants weighing ≤ 2000gr. and 432 per 1000 infants with birth weight < 1500gr. A univariate analysis showed that 10 of the 14 factors related had an statistically significant association to ROP (p <0.05). A multivariate analysis showed that weight less than 1250 gr (OR = 2.95, CI = 1.34- 6.51) and the use of surfactant are independent risk factors for ROP and the interaction between the two generates a major risk factor for developing ROP (OR = 10.28, CI = 2.02 to 52.35).
Conclusions: The preterm with weight less than 1250gr. and previous use of surfactant are independent factors for developing ROP and the interaction of the two generates a higher risk for developing ROP.
