Abstract

This study aims to know the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity and associated factors in the Neonatology Service of the Regional Hospital Las Mercedes Chiclayo in the period 2007-2009. For this purpose we used a design: observational, retrospective, cross-sectional analytical study.

Results: During the study period, 353 newborns were screened of whom 22% had some degree of ROP. According stages: ROP I 48.7%, ROP II 35.5%, ROP III, 13.2%, ROP IV1.3%, ROP V 1.3%. Serious ROP is reported in 32%. 38% required surgical treatment. Regarding risk factors: The administration of supplemental oxygen: 95% of oxygen is received by chaos helmet, mustache nasal CPAP or mechanical ventilation. Respiratory Distress Syndrome present in 93%. Weight: 64.4% of newborns are less than 1500 gr. Gestational age: 54% are under 32 weeks. Sex: female 53%. Sepsis 43.4%.

Conclusions: Retinopathy of prematurity including severe forms, is related inversely to gestational age less than 32 weeks and weighing less than 1500 gr. An association between ROP administration of supplemental oxygen, respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.
