Objective: Is to compare the severity of the clinic and epidemiological characteristic and manifestations of diarrhea with and without rotavirus in children under 5 years old.
Materials and methods: A retrospective research in a random sample of 297 children under 5 years old with acute diarrhea, assisted in “Hospital de Emergencias Pediatricas” during 2010.The RV diagnose was done by the inmunomatografic fast test for the qualitative identification of Rotavirus (RIDA Quick), to determinate the severity of the illness used the Ruuska-Vesicari score. The results where expressed in relative and absolute measures, the analysis was performed by central tendency measures, chi square and odds ratio, both with their confidence intervals.
Results: In 90 children under 5 years old (30.30%) rotavirus was identified, with predominance in the cases of children between 12 and 23 moths old. Significant differences where found between the positive and negative rotavirus groups in the presence of vomiting, mean days of vomiting, quantity of vomiting in the last 24 hours, in Vesikari score, in dehydration level and received treatment.
Conclusions: The results show that clinic differences and higher seriousness for negative rotavirus in children under 5 years old exists.
