The little variation in infant mortality rates in Peru, as in the rest of the world, depends on the high mortality rates in the neonatal stage. Prematurity is the main cause of death in this period of life. The socioeconomic impact that it represents in the nations has made researchers and decision makers in recent years analyze the problem and design strategies for its prevention. The application of strategic evidence-based interventions that involve, above all, adequate prenatal control, and care for premature birth, can allow the reduction of the high rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality due to prematurity in our country.
