Objective: To evaluate the overweight as cardiovascular risk (CVR) compared to obesity and severe obesity in children 2-14 years old using the triglycerides to high density lipoprotein colesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C)
Methods and Material: Cross sectional study. We analized the registries of the database of children with overweight, obesity and severe obesity paired by age and sex from the Endocrinology Pediatric Unit of Cayetano Heredia Hospital from may 2010 to may 2019. We compared the TG/HDL-C ratio as CVR marker with a cut off ≥2.32. We categorized the age in three groups: 2-7, >7-11 and >11-14 years old. We defined the level of adiposity using the recomendation of the The European Society of Endocrinology and the Pediatric Endocrine Society.
Results: It were included 306 children (102 children per group), 57F y 45M for each group. The median age was 10.65 ± 3.28 years old. The CVR was present in 59.8%, 60.78% y 68.63% of children with overweight, obesity and severe obesity respectively without significant differences (p=0.359). We found CVR in 35.9% of children 2 – 7 years old, 63.7% of children >7 – 11 years old and 70.45% in children >11- 14 years old; with significant differences (p=0.001).
Conclusions: Overweight children has a CVR as much as obesity and severe obesity children.
