Effect of the breastfeeding interval in the newborn weight recovery breastfed on demand

Introduction: Expecting to follow breats-feeding recommendation, mothers believe their newborn are left hungry when breastfeeding frecuently, this disappointed and abandon exclusive breastfeeding.
Objective: To Evaluate the effect of breast-feeding interval in the newborn weight recovery breastfed on demand, Hospital II Pucallpa 2013.
Methods: Cohorts study evolves newborn weight: at brith and every two days, until is reached the weight birth again. Records of schedule of breast- feeding on demand. The study classified the mean time interval: < 0.5, 0.6-0.9, 1-1.5, 1.6-1.9 and 2 – 2.5 hours. Estimated .There was estimated the incidence of newborn weight recovery as early (< 7 days), expected (8-13 days) and late (> 14 days). There was applied Chi Square, Relative Risk and others.
Results: Breast-feeding newborns with interval between 2 to 2,5 hours are 7,2 folds in risk to not recovery their weight birth before the 14 days of life comparing with newborns breast-fed with intervals less than every 2 hours.
Conclusion: The official recommendation must be reviewed. Newborn breast-fed in the 2 - 2,5 hours interval increases the risk of late recovery birth weight.
