Abstract

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia describes a spectrum of chronic pulmonary problems related to preterm delivery and therapies. Definition, risk factors, radiological changes and pathology have evolved over time due to changes on neonatal therapy. Clinical characteristics involve not only the respiratory system but cardiovascular, gastroenterology and CNS as well. Its management can include oxygen, diuretics, bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory therapy. An adequate nutrition is crucial in bronchopulmonary dysplasia because somatic growth correlates with lung growth. Prophylaxis against sincitial respiratory virus and influenza is also important. It is unlikely that bronchopulmonary dysplasia disappears, as long as, ELBW infant deliveries continue.
