Abstract

Se actualiza la importancia de la ecología intestinal y su relación con otros factores que participan en su equilibrio y permiten establecer el concepto de ecosistema intestinal resaltando el papel de la flora intestinal. Se describen los efectos de la flora residente o autóctona y la pasajera o transitoria, y las acciones más importantes de la flora intestinal. Se define la importancia de la barrera microbiana. Se explican los eventos que acontecen en el curso de la diarrea con relación al ecosistema intestinal, en especial en las diarreas de causa infecciosa y la asociada al uso de antibióticos.
